Two families (four 11–12 year olds total) — Paris stopover, then based near Aigues-Vives, Gard, exploring the Camargue coast, Provençal countryside, and local festival culture. Day 1 — Sun Aug 16 — Paris → Nîmes

Note: both sets of twins list sailing among their favorite activities, so this was a good fit for the group.
Day 3 — Tue Aug 18 — Beauvoisin Fête Votive
Base: Aigues-Vives. The Beauvoisin Fête Votive (Aug 15–23) overlapped nearly the whole stay — Camargue bull-running tradition, ~20–25 min from Aigues-Vives.

Cultural note: the empègue — a bull-shaped stencil pressed onto a rider’s or runner’s shoulder in wine/pigment — marks participation in an abrivado; houses in the village often display them as a badge of honor.

Practical notes from the day:
- Fondation has no permanent Van Gogh collection (only 1–2 real works, rotating exhibits) — set expectations before going.
- LUMA Tower interior/terraces/slides are free; only galleries are ticketed.
- Thermes de Constantin pairs naturally with Les Arènes for a “Roman half-day.”
- Boulevard Victor-Hugo closes to traffic during Jeudis de Nîmes evening events — plan the drive back around that.

Etymology note: Aigues-Mortes = “dead waters” (stagnant marsh); Aigues-Vives = “living waters” — both from Occitan aigues (Latin aquae).
Also worth seeing in Aigues-Mortes (beyond the festival): the full rampart circuit (~€9/adult), Tour de Constance, Place Saint-Louis, the salt flats visible from the walls, Église Notre-Dame-des-Sablons.
Day 7 — Sat Aug 22 — Sète

Day 8 — Sun Aug 23 — Departure
Return Sixt car at Nemausus Car Park, Nîmes (Level -2, after-hours) by 8:00 AM → late-morning Ryanair flight Nîmes → Dublin → overnight Dublin (unbooked) → flight Dublin → Boston, Aug 24.
Discussed but did not happen
- Pont du Gard kayaking (Collias outfitters — Canoë Le Tourbillon, Kayak Vert, Canoe Collias) — researched as a top pick for an active day with the kids, but didn’t end up happening on this trip.
- Horseback riding with À Cheval Chez Théo (Magali Tauleigne) — rescheduled after Beauvoisin, but ultimately did not happen on this trip.
Practical Tips for Other Families
- Festivals rotate villages weekly all summer — search “[village] fête votive [year] programme” for exact dates; a fête in your specific base town may not overlap your stay (e.g., Aigues-Vives’ own fête votive was July 1–5, well before this trip).
- Free beaches are genuinely good here — you don’t need to prebook a beach club; buy umbrellas locally and use a public beach (Playa JJ area, Espiguette).
- TGV trains leave exactly on time — arrive on the platform 10+ min early; the departure board may show a different end-destination than your actual stop.
- Local specialties worth seeking out: Picon Bière (Paris), Costières de Nîmes wine, tielle sétoise (Sète), Blanche Verveine from Bières de Sommières.
