Synopsis
In this searing, funny, and deeply personal play by Joshua Harmon, a dying woman calls her grandson and makes a specific request: she asks him to write a play about their family, insisting, “Make it as bitter and vitriolic as possible.” The play follows this request, leading the playwright to recreate thirty years of family history. The narrative unfolds as a complex, poignant, and often hilarious exploration of three generations, encompassing family fights, monstrous behavior, enduring love, and the complications of their shared life.
