Synopsis

The Ceremony is the sixth play in Mfoniso Udofia’s nine-play “Ufot Family Cycle.” It explores themes of love, reconciliation, and cultural heritage, focusing on Ekong Ufot—the only son of Abasiama and Disciple—as he prepares for his wedding to Lumanti Rathi. The story follows Ekong’s efforts to navigate the rituals required for his wedding while attempting to reconcile with his long-estranged father, setting the narrative against a backdrop that intertwines Nigerian and Nepali cultures.

  • Review - New England Theatre Geek: A “delightful” and “cathartic” exploration of family dynamics, particularly how weddings stir madness and stir “Desi and Black joy.”
  • Review - Stage and Cinema: “Highly recommended” production capturing the struggle of the couple as they navigate intergenerational trauma and balancing Nigerian and Nepali cultural traditions.
