Synopsis

Purpose by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (winner of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) is a searing and hilarious exploration of faith, class, ambition, and heritage. It follows the Jasper family, a prominent Black American political dynasty, as their carefully curated life begins to fracture upon the return of their youngest son with an unexpected guest.

My Review

Saw this with Cheddi and Ali. Felt like two different performances. The first act was insanely good: high intensity, riveting acting, compelling story with just enough unresolved story lines that I was itching to see where it would go. The second act came in a little less intense for me which isn’t to see it was bad but it didn’t hit the same as the first. The final father/son scene at the end felt underwritten and disconnected from the rest of the play.

Ezra Knight was perfectly cast. Kalyne Ashley Coleman and MarHadoo Effeh stole the show every time they spoke.
